Settling into our hotel room in Nanjing...

It looks like we can't connect to our blog from the laptop. We took a 2 hour flight and it feels like we are worlds away from where we started this morning. We were met at the airport by our local guide, Jane. She took us to our van, which looked like it drove (or was pushed) off a movie set! I don't think it had air conditioning, but we did get a refreshing 92 degree breeze as we drive with the windows open. The city of Nanjing is beautiful. It is a mixture of old and new, with European style architecture as well as the expected Asian feel.
Jane checked us into our hotel and gave us a few minutes to settle in before taking us on a walking tour of the local area. We went to a supermarket and a mall, and she showed us how to order and pay for certain items in the stores. She took us to a local restaurant, where she ordered dinner for us. She has been very informative and helpful. I was hoping to explore the area a little more after dinner but Avery and Mike both fell asleep.
I decided to unpack and prepare for Jack's arrival tomorrow. It is starting to feel real. I have everything ready to take with us when we meet him...a toy car, bubbles, extra diapers, bottle, snacks and change of clothes. We are nervous. I started to cry in the supermarket when Jane told us that he will know something is different tomorrow...he has never left the orphanage, and will definitely be able to tell that something is up! He is bring brought to us after a 2.5 hour car ride. I can only imagine the mood he will be in.
We are debating whether it not to visit his orphanage later in the week. We don't think it's a great idea to take him back there on a 2.5 hour drive, let him see his friends, caretakers and familiar surroundings again, only to take him away from there yet again. Because we are the only family adopting right now, we will have as much time as we need to ask questions when we meet with the orphanage staff on Tuesday (when we sign the adoption papers). For that reason we don't feel such an urgent need to go back to the orphanage. We will see how things go tomorrow at the drop off. I can't wait to get my hands in him and begin to make up for lost time. One more night til he is ours!!

  1. Hi Honeys,
I can just imagine how nervous you are feeling. It is now the time you have been waiting for these past almost 6 years. I'm sure Jack will be nervous also but children are very pliable and after the first little while he will understand what we already know that you are loving and caring people who will love him and teach him all the wonderful things the world has to offer. I know Avery will be a big help in helping him see what good parents can mean to him also.
